Domain Pain

The story so far.....

I blame it on Ebay really. Bored one day I was just browsing the various auctions and found an affiliate website for sale. An hour or so later I had purchased www.scifi-vision.com .

During the process of transferring the name I had to visit GoDaddy.....that was when I got hooked. I tried a few words, ideas and names out to see if they were available and ended up having bought 5 domains. The opportunities seemed endless to me; I could sell them on and retire, develop them and make even more money, sit on them as my nest egg.

Within 24 hours I joined a couple of domain forums. I was going to become a .com name so where better to start. The main forum I used was Acorn. Within a few hours on Acorn my .com fortune was all gone! I had learned a few home truths......

  • it's not a good idea to register names that are trademarks, especially ones that are owned by the International Olympic Committee.
  • however good your names are they need to really mean something.
  • Parking a domain to make money on pay per click adverts is a great idea but only if people are actually going to find your site. The 11 millionth result on Google just doesn't seem to cut the mustard!
  • The domain game is extremely addictive, everyone on the forums is out there looking for that one great domain name that will make them rich - thats why I bought www.vodka.net.cn . I'd seen the price that vodka.com had made and thought I'd buy the last remaining "vodka" domain, and China is a developing market isn't it?

As of today I now own in excess of 140 domains - I did say it was addictive. I have sold one domain, for £100 and earned $5.16 in pay per click revenue. The next one I register will definitely be the big one!

Oh, and on a side note......don't try to register domains if you are under the influence of alcohol! The typos and silly things you find that you've bought when you sober up are a bit embarassing! e.g. www.stopwettingbed.com
